After the Floods, It's Fossil Time!

If you've been waiting for the right time to search for ancient treasures, now is it! After heavy rains and flooding, the Upper Iowa River often reveals some of its best-kept secrets—fossils that have been hidden beneath layers of sand and gravel.

As high waters rise and recede, they wash away sediment and expose many fossil-rich areas along the riverbanks, gravel bars, and especially near the limestone bluffs. These freshly uncovered "fossil bars" are excellent places to discover fossils that date back hundreds of millions of years—when Iowa was covered by a shallow tropical sea.

As you paddle downstream, you'll find gravel bars and shoreline areas that are only accessible by water, So keep an eye out for fossilized corals, brachiopods, crinoid stems, trilobite fragments, and other fascinating pieces of prehistoric history.

We shuttle you upstream so when you arrive at the landing, you can just mosey back to your campsite or cabin, kick back around the campfire, and share your fossil discoveries with family and friends.

Fossil hunting is just one of the many great escapes at Harvest Farm Campground that make camping here so special.

Ready for your own fossil adventure? Reserve your campsite or Amish-built cabin today and discover why the Upper Iowa River is one of the Midwest's hidden gems for outdoor fun and fossil hunting!

Seasonal Sites at Harvest Farm Campground

Join the Wait List for Your Chance at a Site

Dreaming of spending your weekends and summer days at Harvest Farm Campground? You’re not alone! Our seasonal camp sites continue to be one of the most popular ways to enjoy everything the campground has to offer—and for good reason.

Yes, all seasonal sites are full for the current season. But if you’re interested in becoming part of our seasonal camping family, now is the time to get on our Wait List.

How the Wait List Works

Each fall, at the end of the season in October, we determine which sites are available for the following season, and start calling campers on the waiting list. Some years we have several openings due to camper turnover. Other years, only one or two sites open up.

Because availability changes from year to year, the only way to be considered for a seasonal site is to complete an application and get on our wait list.

If you’re hoping to secure a seasonal site for next season, don’t wait until spring—get your application in now.

What’s so great about a seasonal site?

There’s something very special about seasonal camping. Instead of packing, hauling, and setting up every weekend, your camper is ready whenever you are. Seasonal sites come with full services, a five-star staff and lots of amenities. Learn more on our camping page.

Seasonal campers also enjoy:

  • Convenience – Arrive and relax without the hassle of setup each trip. Just drive in and camp.

  • More time outdoors – Spend more time enjoying your weekends and less time preparing for them

  • A home away from home – Many seasonal campers live here. Several come and stay for weeks at a time. And several work from here, too—both remote and local jobs. It’s your home, your space, your life, your address (3690 318th Ave, Cresco, IA 52136). And there’s a convenience store for all your grocery, camper, laundry, and entertainment needs,

  • Community – Build friendships and become part of our campground family… or not. You can get as involved as you like. There’s always something going on—for you and your family & friends… if you want.

  • Consistency – Make it your own! Return to your favorite place all season long.

Nestled on the scenic bluffs overlooking the Upper Iowa River, the campground offers breathtaking views, peaceful surroundings, and a one-of-a-kind natural setting that keeps campers coming back year after year. It’s a property unlike any other—where river valley views, wooded landscapes, and the beauty of Northeast Iowa create an unforgettable camping escape.

Ready to Join the Wait List?

If seasonal camping is something you’ve been considering, we encourage you to submit your application and reserve your place on the wait list.

Openings for the next season are determined in October, and we can only contact campers who have completed the application process.

We look forward to welcoming new seasonal campers as sites become available next season!

It’s a rare occurrence. In fact, it’s never happened before, but a seasonal site just became available for this season. Yes, we still have a waiting list, but everyone on it has either already settled into another campground or is not ready for a site right now.

If you or someone you know and love is interested in a seasonal site this year, we’d love to get you in. Complete the app or give us a call 563-885-8562 or complete the app AND give us a call. But don’t dawdle, IT’S TIME TO CAMP!
